Today is a rainy day in Brooktondale. My house, which I love, is really a birdhouse situated on top of a hill overlooking another higher hill, pond and trees. This morning it has rained the lover’s moves of precipitation- gentle, forceful, lazy but persistent. A fog is moving in and I am settling down for a day of stories and learning to play the harp. My dream, Stories with Spirit, keeps unfolding for me as I sift through the vision of bringing stories and music to terminally ill and chronically ill children. The healing arts practitioners use harp and voice to soothe and comfort the dying. How can I use harp, voice and stories to comfort dying and ill children. How can I create an organization that trains and certifies storytellers and musicians to do this around the country? This quiet almost silent day is a day to wonder.

Last Friday, Christine Brouwer (www.mirasmovement.org) and I went to Rochester, NY so I could tell stories to the children in the Golisano Children’s Hospital. Along the way, Christine shared with me the story of her daughter Mira’s struggle with cancer and ultimate death in April, 2008. Mira was 4 years old. Her original diagnosis was on her 2nd birthday, January 27th, 2006. Christine is one of the army of mother’s who try to make things good and grief less all encompassing by helping others. Christine founded Mira’s Movement, an advocacy organization for kids with cancer with the intent of making just one life better for a family going through this ordeal. Oh how my heart broke for her and her family.

When we arrived at the hospital we went to the cancer wing. It’s hard to tell stories in a hospital for a number of reasons. Emotionally it’s overwhelming to see children in pain. The treatments are also difficult to watch because the children are hooked up to tubes, missing their hair, with visible large scars. They are accompanied by parents, grandparents and hospital support people showering them with attention and care.

The first child I told to was bedridden and a teenager with developmental delays. She wasn’t able to speak but was very communicative facially and physically. She was on a feeding tube. As I stood trying to call up a story or song that was just right, not too long, and easy to follow I sang the song Happy Birthday I learned off a Bill Harley album. This isn’t the dirge we usually sing but a sweet waltz. I sang that to her and she smiled. Then I told the story “The Big Wide Mouth Toad Frog” with sign language and some simple repetitive movements. She laughed each time the frog said “Who are you and what do you eat?” This room was the room that Mira had stayed in during her treatment there.

Then I went to the play room where I met a beautiful girl and two young children with their mother’s. I told stories with puppets and songs to them for about 40 minutes. During that time different hospital staff and doctor’s would stop in for a listen or to check on the children. This is guerrilla storytelling folks! It’s noisy, lots of distractions but oh, the payoff. Life is good.

Finally, we went to the outpatient treatment center and met four children with their grandma’s . This was the first time I saw a child under two receiving treatments for cancer. I left feeling pretty drained but satisfied that through a small action the world was made a little brighter. I say that like a PollyAnna- it was really difficult and felt like moving a mountain one grain of sand at a time. Life is good.

I’ve just returned from telling stories at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. I was invited by the gracious support of the Memphis Storytelling Guild members. After my performance at the National Storytelling Festival last October, Dixie Brown called and said that the guild would like to sponsor me. It was my first time to Memphis and the story about southern hospitality was found to be true. I was treated like a queen and that includes going to IHOP

I went to St. Jude’s on Monday and performed for a small group of children of a variety of ages. The first thing I noticed was the quality of care these children are receiving . The dedication of the staff to their desires and needs was really touching. My firend and sponsor, Dixie Brown, accompanied me to the hospital and we were both inspired by Danny Thomas. Danny Thomas promised God he would create a childrens’ hospital . Next tot he hospital is a building that chronicles the development of the hospital as well as artifacts about Danny Thomas, his career and family.

The next day I went to the other children’s hospital, Le Bonheur. While St. Jude’s was quiet and beautifully decorated Le Bonheur was bustling, loud and busy. The children there were sick but radiant, accompanied by families and caregivers. I am trying to include some photos from my visit.

While there I also performed for a general population at Dixie Brown’s church. I did my father’s World War II story “Love is War.” There was a crowd of about 100 people and their generosity was humbling.

I am so lucky to work with Mary Stewart, a storyteller originally from Florida and now living in Vermont. Mary is a tall and strong woman, with chapped hands and red cheeks. She lives a simple life in a cabin in a small Vermont town. She cooks, grinds corn, grows her own food and plants seeds, both literally and figuratively. Mary has taught me alot about stories and its precious place in our society and my own psyche. I am not a woman who knows or pretends to even like doing publicity. I know though, if I don’t do publicity, I won’t have an audience. Without an audience, being a storyteller is a ridiculous idea. The only story that matters is the one you hear.

Mary is a woman who keeps a story as a sacred reminder of our responsibility to the world. Mary tells stories to service the story- she understands we are contained in it, not it in us. This is a hard place to stand, especially in a culture that commodifies all of life from first baby’s breath to people’s death. Mary stands aside from that and reminds me that the story is the guide.

I went to my healing school today , www.IMschoolofhealingarts.com, to observe a third year ritual, called the presentation. It is the culmination of lecture, energy work and inquiry into characterology structure and ways of being, fulfillment and being with what is rather than what one wishes. Make no mistake, this is hard, hard work that requires a deep heart, split open to longing and love. I experienced this work last year, when i went through my third year and it truly changed my relationship to my life, my past, my present.

I watched two of the third year students extend their hands to one another in understanding and the effects of it were astounding. Like Inanna descending into the underworld to meet her completeness in Ereskigal, I witnessed a magnificent descent and ascent into the underworld and back again. I hardly have words to express this experience. To see the heart open, to witness the bravery of someone who is willing to bring love back into the room, is a warrior, a Christlike being, carrying light back to the world.

First, rub your hands together very quickly to make a swishing sound. Then you say and the children repeat…

I got a story in my hands and it wants to come out!

I got a story in my hands and it wants to come out!

My friend Linda Ruth, is an astrologer who often speaks about Chiron, the wounded healer. I thought of the story “The Fisher King” and whether I have the facts right or not, I remember that the horrible wound the King has is healed by the one who asks “What ails you?” No advice, no knowledge, just a simple question “what ails you?” The reason this story is on my mind is because I have been putting together a number of workshop initiatives with storytelling and healing and thinking about the role of the listener in healing. Being open to the answer when one attempts to speak the ailment. There is a also my belief that all people have the capacity, with heartfelt and focused guidance, to find the healer within themselves. I guess this also comes from my experience of finding the stories I write and tell and hear to be a balm for my heart as well. So, what ails you?
